Why your windshield frosts even when it didn't snow

Winter car tips · 4 min read

It didn't snow. It barely got below freezing. And your windshield is still a sheet of white at 6:45am. Here's why that happens, and the one-minute fix most people never try.

The sky is pulling the heat out of your glass

On a clear night, anything facing the open sky gives off heat straight up into space. Your windshield is a big, thin sheet of glass tilted right at the sky, so it loses heat fast.

That's why the glass can get colder than the air around it. The moisture in the air hits that cold glass and freezes into frost. It's also why you can wake up to a frosted windshield when the forecast low was above freezing.

Notice this: cars parked under a tree, a carport, or a building overhang often stay clear while the car in the open driveway frosts over. Same air, same night. The only difference is what's between the glass and the sky.

Why the usual fixes eat your morning

Once the frost is there, you're fighting it. Scraping by hand in the dark, idling the car with the defroster on full, or waiting for the sun. None of these stop the frost from forming. They just clean it up after.

What people do What actually happens
Ice scraper Cold hands, streaks, and it still takes minutes. Mirrors are their own job.
Defroster Often 10+ minutes of idling before you can see out.
Cardboard or a towel Gets damp overnight and can freeze right onto the glass.
Garage or carport Works great, if you have one.
Block the sky with a cover No frost lands on the glass. Pull it off and go.

The fix: block the sky before you go to bed

If frost forms because the glass sees the open sky, the simplest fix is to stop it from seeing the sky. That's the whole idea behind The Clear Morning Kit.

  • Stays put overnight. Magnets sewn into the edges plus straps that hook to your wheels.
